Shown on the picture is a mix of penstemons in my rock garden. They love full sun and can grow in very poor soil. Some of them are in bloom all summer, and they are very drought resistant.

Just want to let you know that my Cactus is blooming.
It is beautiful. Every day a new patch starts to bloom.I hope there will be a lot of flowers for the open garden on June 26.
Also, the Penstemon is showing off. Shades of pink and purple.
My favourite, Persicaria Polymorpha, towers over the garden. Huge blooms are covered with insects.
There are bumble bees everywhere.

We had no access to Internet for the last 3 weeks so I couldn't post anything new.

I started lots of seed this year and I had quite good germination so far. I ordered for the first time from JL Hudson and I am very happy with his seeds.

So far I have germinated: Calycanthus floridus - Carolina Allspice.

Gymnocladus dioica - Kentucky Coffee tree- Íts growing very fast.

Gymnocladus Chnensis - Beautiful white flowers.

Picea purpura - looks so cute when is so little.

Licium Chinense- Interesting shrub with many medical uses.

Colutea x media 'Orange Blader Senna - Pea like flower followed by little inflated bladder seed pods.

Persicaria Polymorpha

Persicaria polymorpha, or Giant Fleece Flower, doesn't have showy leaves although you'll never miss them. IT grows like a big clump right infront of your eyes. It blooms in early summer and goes on into late fall, getting taller along the way. The flowers are pure white and attract a lot of insects. It grows fast and is well behaved in the garden.

I split mine last year to a few clumps and planted them all over the garden.

I am planning to add some to some part-shade beds.

This is one of my favorite perennials.

Opuntia Polyacantha 'Crystal Tide'

I bought this cactus from Gardens North. It is eye catching, whether or not it is flowering. The spines are very white, and they shine in sunlight. The flowers are white and resemble rose flowers.

It grows rather slowly compared to other Opuntia's. It is quite hard to move it due to the large amount of spines, so I use kitchen tongs to move the parts around.

Opuntia viridiflora(Santa Fe cholla)

This is very interesting cactus, it looks like a shrub, and it is branched. Grows to about 30 inches in height and about 72 inches across. Flowers 2-2.5 cm in diameter, apparently brownish-orange in the center .Fruits tubercular, firm and leathery, not juicy, yellow when ripe, persistent, 1.5-2.5 cm in diameter Unfortunately mine haven't flowered yet. Flowers in July.

I don't have any recent pictures but my Santa Fe Cholla looks absolutely amazing. It is about 1,5'tall and 3'wide .It grows on the small hill in very sandy soil in full sun.

Single stems roots very easy to starts new plants.

Right now is fully covered by snow.

It has survived in my garden for five years .

My son really like this cactus and it took us about three mouths to find it .

It was worth it!

I got Echinacea fever this summer .It's rather costly desease and it is contagious.
I bought quite a few for my garden and also for the nursery.

I love them all, but Green Eyes , Hope, and Fragrany Angel are my favorites. The are sturdy, with large horizontal flowers. Angel and Hope have huge cones. They smell like honey, and even fading blooms look good on them.

On the picture Catalpa ovata (Chinese Catalpa ).
Wonderful tree , flowers are creamy pale yellow and smell very sweet.
Single flower look like miniature orchid.
It grows rather fast , I had few flowers on the 3 year old trees .Tolerate heat, humidity and deer.

Winter hardy cactus

I have a collection of winter hardy cacti.Some of them I started from seeds few years ago.Cactus cross pollinate very easy and growing from seeds will give you some interesting results. Most of my patches are in bloom right now and they are amazing .I have few shades of yellow , light pink,raspberry pink and even yellow fading to light salmon.
Unfortunately most of the blooms last only one day.

Magnolia

My regular customers know that I grow trees from seeds. About 10 years ago I seeded a Magnolia and it grew nicely for so many years, but not a single flower.
A few days ago I noticed something white on my magnolia (it almost look like pieces of tissue) ...after many years of waiting she flowered. Not to many, maybe 20 blooms but I am very happy.

Sesleria -Moor Grass

SESLERIA - MOOR GRASS
This is a small , cool season grass.Nice bluish leaves ,dense clumps .It flowers early and the flowers are purple black .Loves sun and looks wonderful in big rockery with gravel mulch.It has been flowering in the garden for almost 2 weeks now.

Alyssum lenense

I am very lucky this spring . I germinated Alyssum lenense. This awesome Alyssum is native to Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Russia.7-25 cm tall, often woody at base,small dark green-gray leaves.Masses of yellow flower followed by nice seed heads.This Alyssum is ornamental in every season.Grows in sandy soil and full sun .Definitely a keeper.

There are still lots of flowers blooming in the garden .One of my favorites is Anemone Japonica "Honorine Jobert"(white) and Dendrahema weyrichi.That little plant has about 50 blooms right now.It is growing in my rock garden in very poor soil( 70% sand).They are relay good addition to any garden.

June 27th,2009 we were lucky enough to have a wonderful group(over 40 in all) from the Parkdale (Toronto) Hort. club
We were the last stop that day for them as the wandered through the display gardens/seed beds and nursery area.

Hey spring arrived .We have first primulas blooming.Drumstick primulas are always first to pop up.Mukdenia Rossi and Bergenia are in bloom to .I also have little purple primula covered in flower but don't know it name , its wonderful .I love spring!!!!!!!!!!

Snow is melting slowly .It will take long time to melt 3-4ft of snow. I have garden show next week and I am hoping for warm weather.All my pants are still covered .

At least at home and my little greenhouse spring arrived early .First time in my life Scabiosa Caucasica germinated over 80%.Tomato seedlings having first true leave.I seeded about 17-18 heritage varieties .Some really odd like Green sausage or Purple plum or Black Cherry .The last one is my favorite .

We had lots and lots of snow in early December and I had no time to cover all my plants.Then in January most of snow melted so I had to cover my pots.
I am relay enjoying winter dough .I am caching up with reading and last week I started some seeds.MY Escobaria had 3 seed capsules last year .Very odd ,they where soft , full of seeds and gelatin like substance .After 3,4 weeks all that dried out and I did and up with lots of little seeds .They germinated and now they are the size of sunflower seeds. It will take 2 years before planting them all outside.Lots of seeds are popping up. Centauria rupestris germinate in obandece and its growing like weed .Its makes me happy because lots of people ask for it.I really need to have a big greenhouse.Maybe next year.

It is white outside and I don't like it . Too much snow ,to early .I still have so much to do in gardens and I was hopping for last year December. Last year it was cold but snow less and i was cutting grass on the 20th of December. Here are some pictures I took after first snow fall.

Its getting cold and days are shorter.I should have more time but there is no end to work.Plants to move and split ,seedlings to plant. Garden slowly dieing back with exception of few late bloomers.I have yellow and pink perennials mums.
Red Dendranthemum rubellum "Duchess of Edinburgh" and
little ground cover Dendranthemum weyrchii with pinkish flower.Native asters are in full bloom and they are so beautiful . To but not to many people plant them.To some
they are weeds.

Japanese anenemone

I have Japanese anemone scattered all over my garden .They are flowering for few days now.Pink and white ,about four feet tall ,they add color and height to a fall garden. Anemone are drought tolerant and can grow in a poor soil so are perfect for a tough side.Full sun or part shade they love it all .
It takes about two years for Anemone to start to run a little but you can always remove little ones in the spring 0r plant them where they have plenty of room to grow.They are one of my favorite and wordy to be in every garden.

Origanum rotundifolium "Kent Beauty"

It took me few years to find this plant It is just an oregano but what a beautiful oregano it is. . Origanum is a low growing, spreading plant, and looks like a mini shrub.Papery pink brackets are shaped somewhat like the flower of the hope plant .Colors change from pink to mauve, to almost purple. It is drought tolerant, and to much water or moist soil we kill it.
Perfect plant for the rockery, rock walls and hot sunny places.

Berlandiera Lyrata

It started to rain so I came in to wright about my new addition to the rock garden Berlandiera lyrata -Chocolate daisy
It is a small plant , about 15 in.Nice yellow daises are open early morning and smell like cocoa and vanilla . After temperature rises yellow petals fall to ground leaving behind green center which look like perfect green daisy.
I planted Chocolate daisy in very well drained , sandy soil and full sun .So far I didn't water it I just enjoyed it.I will be planting many more next year .The rain stoped ,we got all together 5 minutes .I have to go and water again.

It is beautiful in the garden .So many colors and interesting plants .One of my favorite grasses (Stipa)is in full bloom.It looks amazing in full sun and with breeze moving its flowers.
In a shaded corner astilbis in fool glory .I don't know there name ,got mother plant long time ago from a friend.They seed easy and thrive in poor soil.Colours may vary from light pink to amethyst.

I am considering hiring someone to do a rain dance for rain. We desperately could do with some rain here at the farm.

There is a Carolina Lupin here that is growing like crazy. It is a yellow lupin that is a native to the US and it is very popular with my customers. It is in full flower now, which shows off the lovely flower. When it is finished flowering, the flurry of interest will be over, which is a shame as it is a lovely plant.
